Guidelines for the Evaluation of
Gamut Mapping Algorithms

The aim of this web page is to provide supporting material for the guidelines for the evaluation of the performance of gamut mapping algorithms (GMAs). We would like to encourage you to conduct GMA evaluation experiments so that their results can then form the basis of developing and recommending an optimal solution for cross-device and cross-media image reproduction.

In the Guidelines, guidance is given on:

the test images to be used,
the media on which they are to be reproduced,
the viewing conditions to be employed,
the measurement procedures to be followed,
the GMAs to be applied,
the way gamut boundaries are to be calculated,
the colour spaces in which the mapping is to be done
and the experimental method for carrying out the evaluation.

The Guidelines also contain example workflows that show how they are to be applied under different circumstances. To help participants in this coordinated research, a checklist is also provided and the complete package can be obtained from the CIE as Technical Report "CIE 156:2003 Guidelines for the evaluation of gamut mapping algorithms."
