This patent deals with gamut expansion so as to extend the gamut of a printed
image to be displayed on a CRT. The algorithm described here can be either
implemented in CIELAB or CIELUV and is based on first extending L*, depending
on the ratio of lightness ranges of the two gamuts, and then C*, again
depending on the ratio of maximum chromas along a given line of constant
lightness and hue angle. After this, further compensation is carried out
to maintain the appearance of the image, e.g. the lightness of colours
is also increased when their chroma was increased (i.e. to maintain their
saturation).
