Division 8 - TC8-03: Survey of Gamut Mapping Papers
Marcu (1998)
Like Braun and Fairchild (1998), this paper too is concerned about arriving
at a hue-uniform colour space for gamut mapping. The Munsell colour order
system is taken as the source of hue-uniform data and CIELAB is transformed
accordingly (whereby the transformed CIELAB is called mLAB). The following
five gamut mapping algorithms, all of which keep hue unaltered, were investigated
in mLAB:
(a) constant lightness clipping
(b) constant chroma clipping
(c) combination of (a) and (b)
(d) clipping towards the centre of the gamut
(e) mapping to a variable point on the lightness axis (Marcu and Abe,
1996)
The evaluation showed that the mLAB space was preferred over CIELAB
in 21 out of 25 cases. As far as the GMAs were concerned, method (e) was
preferred over methods (a), (b) and (c). The experimental results presented
here are preliminary ones and the author intended to continue the evaluation
using further observers.
