The gamut mapping algorithms described in this paper were developed with the ICC colour management framework in mind. This was done by evaluating the performance of a gamut mapping algorithms as implemented in ICC device profiles, focusing on errors occurring when device profile transformations are carried out. The proposed method ? Chroma Proportional Clipping (CPC) ? is similar to chord clipping (MacDonald and Morovic, 1995) with the difference that the point towards which colours are clipped is not on the achromatic axis but has a chroma which depends on the chromas of the original and reproduction cusps and the chroma of the original colour (Figure 1).
A psychophysical evaluation (using a category judgement technique) of
CPC was carried out in comparison with minimum *E mapping, LCLIP (Morovic
and Luo, 1997a) and chord clipping and CPC was found to perform best in
the context of implementation in device profiles.
