CIE
Division 8 - TC8-03: Survey of Gamut Mapping Papers
Motomura (1999)
A continuation of the authorís previous work (Motomura et al., 1997) is
presented in this paper, whereby two improvements over the previous solution
are discussed in particular. These were the use of a new technique for
finding the best mapping point in the reproduction gamut (Simplex iteration)
and the use of CIELAB as the gamut mapping space. Further, the gamut mapping
was carried out on the basis of two different approaches to finding the
average vectors for the colour categories used. The first of these relied
on colour naming randomly selected CIELAB colours from the original and
reproduction media and the second consisted in colour naming colours in
a block-average version of the original image whereby resulting in image-dependent
gamut mapping which takes into account not only an imageís colours but
also their spatial arrangement. The use of colour categories based on block-average
images is claimed to have resulted in improved image contrast.
